November Is for Neighbors: Helping Each Other Through Food

“When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, ‘Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.’
– Fred Rogers

As our community faces challenges from the recent government shutdown and changes to SNAP/EBT programs, Scale House Market and Four Roots are stepping up with something simple, human, and heartfelt: helping our neighbors.

Food has always been at the center of what we do — from supporting small farmers and makers to ensuring access to nutritious, local food for everyone. Over the years, Four Roots has distributed nearly six million pounds of fresh food across the region. Now, with “November Is for Neighbors,” we’re turning that same energy toward helping families right here in Spokane Valley.

Here’s how you can join us:

1. Purchase a Grocery Gift Card
Buy a gift card in any amount, and we’ll make sure it’s used for grocery items only — helping local families stretch their budgets when they need it most. Whether it’s $5 or $50, every dollar makes a difference.

2. Sponsor a Food Box
For $35, you can sponsor a nutritious food box filled with locally sourced products, curated by our staff to provide real nourishment and support local farms. Each box includes:

  • 6+ fresh produce items
  • 1 protein (meat, poultry, or seafood)
  • 1–2 dairy products
  • 1–2 dry goods like bread, grains, or legumes

3. Spread the Word
Tell a friend, share a post, and help us reach more neighbors in need. The wider our network of helpers, the stronger our community becomes.

If you’ve been impacted by the shutdown or loss of benefits, come talk to us. Just show your EBT card or simply say, “Can I put this on my neighbor’s tab?” Our team will make sure you’re taken care of, no questions asked.

We’re also inviting volunteers and local vendors to get involved. If you can help aggregate boxes, donate ingredients, or assist in preparing ready-to-heat meals, we’d love your support.

This is what Scale House Market was built for: to serve as a hub for connection, community, and compassion. Together, we can make sure no one in Spokane goes hungry this season.

We are stronger together. Let’s be helpers.
